Re-Purpose Books Craft Idea

We all are more aware of living green to make our planet a healthier place.  We are encouraged to recycle, re-purpose, and reuse as many items as we can.  I would like to share a craft idea with you today that will re-purpose old books into a funky and uniquely functional item.

Altering old books is not exactly a new idea, it is actually considered an art form and there is even an International Society of Artists who work with books to create some pretty incredible pieces.

How To Make A Purse From Old Books is an article that focuses on the craft of re-purposing old books into a new purse. A fun craft project that can be done for yourself or as a gift. Think of the joy that a librarian, teacher, or avid book reader would get from being able to carry their “stuff” in what looks like a book!

This is a project that you can do in one day. The how to article has a great video with step by step instructions on how to make your purse from an old book. I would recommend that you choose a book that is not collectible and is in bad enough shape that it isn’t even a good reading copy. After all, no use in ruining a perfectly good book! The idea is to find a new purpose for a book that would probably be tossed away. Consider an appropriate size of book, too.  Do you have a lot of items to carry in a handbag or just a few?

Once you have selected your old book, you really don’t need many other supplies.  You will want some coordinating fabric for your liner, a ready made handle, glue, a sewing machine or a needle and thread, a utility knife, and some colored markers.  Follow the directions in the article mentioned above and you will have an altered book that becomes a useful and fun item to carry.

Go ahead, save an old book from the landfill and create a conversation piece to keep or give to someone special.
