The migration of food

With the migration of people, the culture of different places has also been affected. In the Scandinavian countries, for example, a large part of the population is of foreign origin. This is due to a number of reasons. During the 1970s, Swedish companies actively looked for laborers in Italy. Young, strong men in particular were invited to come and work in the factories. These men brought their families with them, as well as their culture. Including the culture surrounding food.

Today, pasta is eaten almost everywhere. But it is not so long ago that it was considered children’s food in the Northern parts of Europe. The same with rice and curry. Some British children almost think it is the national dish, so common is it. Eating Indian food like chapati, samosa, or daal is a weekly occurrence. if rice and curry is so common in the UK, what about pizza in the US? No, it is not the invention of Pizza Hut, it came over with the immigrants. Maybe the US is not such a good example, seeing how most of the population originate with the immigrants. But still, you get the point.

It is wonderful to be able to experience food from different parts of the world, without having to travel there. Why not make it a point to try out some of the local, foreign restaurants. Usually the people working there are very happy to explain what they are serving and how to eat it. Who knows- you might discover your new favorite dish.

There is a lot to discover in life, and I am happy to have my children with me during the journey. We love cooking, travelling and reading. Taking pictures of nature and other things that come in our way also keep us busy. With digital cameras it is so easy to fix pictures and use them for a lot of things, including Zazzle. Writing articles is also fun, especially when we can include some of our pictures!
