Theme For Prom

March 17, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Themes

Choosing a theme for prom is a daunting task. Will everyone like it? Are there decorations available that go along with your number one choice? Where do you find decor to use for your choosen theme for prom? Each year, there is a list of the top 10 themes used for proms. This list can be a jumping off point for your committee — give you some ideas. The key to a successful and unique prom is to choose a theme and then make it your own. What I mean is, you can choose one from the list and then put a unique spin on it.

For example, let’s say you choose Las Vegas. Now, that theme is wide open for interpretation. Will you use:

  • The Las Vegas Stip for your inspiration? Neon lights, fancy clothes, limos, building/city silhouettes and palm trees?
  • Or, maybe you want to focus more on the themed hotels and casinos by naming tables after them and using their themes as vignettes throughout the venue.
  • Vintage is big. Maybe that’s the angle you want to use. Create a sort of Vintage Vegas — Vegas in it’s heyday — theme using celebrities like the Rat Pack, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and the like.

You get the idea. Choosing a broad theme and then narrowing it down and choosing a specific direction will open new decor ideas to you and make it more unique instead of cookie cutter. Do some research, talk with your committee and even make some presentation boards to get a feel for each theme you are considering. Find out what is out there to use as decor before committing. Choosing a beautiful title for your event is great but make sure it can translate into decor as well!

Bottom line — do your research BEFORE choosing a theme and a venue. Below are some guidlines to help you decide on a fabulous theme for prom!

  • Find out the decorating rules of your venue.(i.e. Can you use candles, attach things to the walls or ceilings…)
  • Are there any focal points that should be emphasized in your decor plan?
  • Get a copy of your venue floorplan(or make one). This will help when deciding where to place your tables and room decor.
  • Are there an “fixed” or immovable features you need to decorate around at your venue? (i.e. columns, stage, closets,
    countertops, etc…)
  • Are there dead areas that will allow you to make vignettes in theme?
  • How high are the ceilings? (Lots of decor is 8ft to 12ft tall, will your venue accomodate that?)

Most of all — Have Fun! You will remember your proms all your life. Choose a theme and then make it your own through the decor. Good luck!
