The Life of Women

Somebody once said that women have to work twice as hard as men to succeed, and there is a lot of truth in that. Many things are working against women. Just take the very natural and delightful thing of having children. It is the woman who has to put her career on hold to give birth, nothing to do about it. While having children is a wonderful thing, it makes it harder for a woman to succeed.

Despite women having been on the working scene for decades now, statistics show that they still bear the brunt of domestic chores. After a day of hard work at the office, she has to face cooking, cleaning and ironing. Not much time to relax and prepare for the next day.

Women in the developing countries are working even harder. Often just having enough to eat from day to day, and preparing the meals, take most part of the day. Just imagine having to walk for miles to draw water, and to carry it back on the back or head. With fuel often limited, to cook enough food for all to eat. Grinding grains by hand on a stone-mill. Even these women being pregnant and giving birth, often every year.

In Ethiopia, the women in the rural areas often live like this. Still, some have managed to make it to international fame. Take Derartu Tulu, for example, who was a young shepherdess in the province of Arsi. Today she is an internationally renown runner, having won many medals in both the Olympics and different marathons. To many women she is a hope that life can change.

Many people agree that women have to work harder to succeed, not much to do about it. But, they also say, this is not too difficult. Women have an inner strength that is unique. A source of energy and devotion that helps them out during stress. The love of family which keeps them going despite hardships. This is why there are so many successful women everywhere. Success not only being at the place of work, but also in the continued welfare of their families.

There is a lot to discover in life, and I am happy to have my children with me during the journey. We love cooking, travelling and reading. Taking pictures of nature and other things that come in our way also keep us busy. With digital cameras it is so easy to fix pictures and use them for a lot of things, including Zazzle. Writing articles is also fun, especially when we can include some of our pictures!
