Download Audacity – free audio recording and editing software

November 12, 2010 | Author: | Posted in Audio

Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing audio and is great for making podcasts! The audio files can be saved into a variety of formats including mp3 and .wav.

Audacity is available in two versions: the 1.2 Series and the 1.3 Series (Beta) and can be used on different operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.

I have recently been trying out Audacity and have found it very simple to use. However, there’s also a comprehensive range of tutorials to help you out if you have any problems and there’s also a User Manual and a Wiki.

Audacity has a range of features that will suit both the new, inexperienced audio software user to “pros” that have been recording for years. Here’s a comment that was left on my page Download Audacity:

I use audacity for recording narratives at work for our instructional videos. For free, it is an excellent piece of audio recording software. If you don’t believe me, well, i’m also a music producer and DJ, so know good audio software.

An excellent lens if you are looking for tips on how to start up with and use Audacity.

Audacity’s main features include:

Record and play sounds

Import and export WAV, AIFF, MP3, and OGG files

Edit sounds using cut, copy and paste

Unlimited undo functionality

Track mixing

Apply different effects to recordings

Built-in amplitude-envelope editor

Customizable spectrogram mode

Frequency-analysis window for audio-analysis applications

Built-in effects include bass boost, wah wah and noise removal

Supports VST plug-in effects

You need to download the LAME Encoder in order to be able to use Audacity – this is also free. LAME is a high quality MPEG Audio Layer III (MP3) encoder that is used to encode and compress the Audio files created by Audacity.

The Audacity website has a tutorial on how to instal Lame, which is also very simple. All the links you need can be found at Download Audacity.
