Best Computer Mics

November 12, 2010 | Author: | Posted in Hardware

Recently I have been researching the Best Computer Mics. I have a very old headset with a microphone, which I have decided to replace. It is so old that the foam on the headseat has completely disintegrated.  However the proliferation of computer mics launched onto the market over the last few years means that there’s a huge range to choose from.

Computer microphones are an extremely valuable add-on to any PC because they offer everyone who has an internet connection the  opportunity to communicate directly with anyone nearly anywhere in the world. A PC mic can be used for both business tasks, such as audio conferencing, internet phone calls, and more personal uses such as online gaming or keeping in touch with family.

Speech recognition software also enables users to dictate directly to a word processor as well as to record voice files in various formats to use on websites, in blogs, or to send in emails.

So how to choose the best computer mic?

So to find the best computer mics, I asked myself the following questions:

What is the best buy PC microphone?

What use will I be putting the mic to?

Price vs Quality

What is the difference between a $10 PC mic and one that costs $50? Cheap microphones offer poor quality to average sound, they can fail to operate more easily and to keep manufacturing costs down, they will be made of cheap materials. This means they are more prone to break if you drop them.

In order to decide how much to spend on your PC Mic you have to be clear about exactly what you will use it for. Simply chatting with friends online is one thing but if you plan to hold business teleconferences over the internet, then you will need to filter background noise and you certainly won’t want any interference such as crackles and hissing noises.

Speech recognition software is extremely sensitive, so again, you will need a good quality mic. This is also the case if you are adding your voice to music soundtracks.

Types of Computer Microphone

Computer mics can be wired or wireless and can be free standing or in the form of a headset. The cheaper brands tend to be wired and free standing wired and often come bundled with a new PC. However, it is claimed they do not give the best sound quality.

Wireless mics are more expensive. They either clip on to your clothing or are in the form of an earpiece, similar to a Bluetooth cellphone device.

You can select your PC mic from a variety of outlets but I looked at the mics available on Amazon. My criteria for selection was the best selling mics that had an average rating of four or more.
