Google Analytics

If you own a website and want to see what traffic you are getting, the best tool to use is a free tool, Google Analytics.  Google Analytics is easy to integrate to most websites, and most web designers can add the code for you in a matter of minutes.

If you are using a blog interface like WordPress, then you can add the code yourself, or use a plugin to do the work for you.  When I use WordPress as a writing platform, then my favorite Google Analytics plugin is Google Analyticator, which will connect the site to Analytics and also give you an abbreviated version of the tool right on the dashboard of your website.

Google Analytics can tell you where your traffic is coming from, what pages are being searched and read the most, how long someone stays on a page, and how many pages they visit when they come to your site.

You can look for trends, find search terms that you did not think of on your own, and expand your website in the direction of the traffic that keeps cominbg back to your website.  The charts on Google Analytics are easy to read, and you can also connect them to your Google Adsense account.
