Shaker Square Art Contest | Cash Prize

March 1, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Other

It is not often that you can find an art contest that has cash as an award these days, but that is what the new Essence of Shaker Square Art Contest is offering as a prize to the top two contest winners.

Shaker Square store owners Paula Atwell, of Lake Erie Artists Gallery, and Dewey Forward, of Dewey’s Coffee Cafe and the Shaker Square Popcorn Shop, along with other sponsors, COSE Art Network and the Shaker Arts Council, are offering a total of $500 in cash prizes to the best judged entries.  The contest is free to enter, and selected entries will be hung on display in Shaker Square shops and restaurants.

What is the essence of Shaker Square?

Shaker Square means a lot of different things to different people.  It is an area of Cleveland, Ohio that has a very long history, and is also the second oldest shopping center in the United States.  However, over the years Shaker Square has changed quite a bit until it now has become a choice location to eat in local restaurants, and stroll the Square for a movie, or to see an art gallery.

Shaker Square is an old fashioned type of neighborhood.  Every day, you can sit on a bench and watch people walk the Square, going about their day to day routine.  Young parents with children in strollers, families with three or four children holding ice cream cones, business people in suits, and large families coming to the restaurants for family celebrations are all typical sites at Shaker Square.

Shaker Square is the center of two boulevards, Shaker Boulevard which has a median with grass, trees, and flowers, and the RTA Rapid Transit trains running through, and Moreland both North and South, which also has a median with trees and grass.

During most of the year, the North Union Farmers Market runs the Shaker Square Farmers Market every Saturday morning, rain or shine, where neighborhood residents can shop for fresh local produce, organic cheese and meats, bakery, and art.  Crowds come to the center of Shaker Square for the market in all weather, but on sunny days, the market is jammed.  People on bikes, walkers, runners, and grandparents with young children, are tasting, visiting, and shopping.

The Essence of Shaker Square is very hard to define.  If you would like to participate in the art contest, you can get all the rules and download the information from the link above.
