Why you should grow your own vegetables

There are many reasons why you should grow your own vegetables. To start with, it is great fun! Many people find it almost therapeutic to stick their fingers in the soil. To watch a little seed grow into a plant, and then also eat its fruit brings a lot of satisfaction. Of course, you need to have patience and be willing to work. Vegetables do not grow by themselves, just because you put a little seed in a pot. You need to water and weed, tie them up and protect them against little animals that want to share them with you!

In addition, growing your own vegetables will ensure that they are free from pesticides. Buying organic food is often expensive. Among the worst vegetables and fruits when it comes to absorbing pesticides are celery, strawberries and peach. Also bell-peppers and lettuce. Most of these are not too difficult to grow by yourself, even on a balcony or very small plot.

For many people, avoiding making a carbon footprint is a good reason for growing them at home. A carbon footprint is is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment. If you have to drive far to buy food, for example, your car will pollute the air. Or, if the vegetables are imported or come from far away, even bringing them to your store will affect the environment. Growing your own vegetables obviously will not bring about this problem.

It is fantastic towards the end of the summer, when a lot of the vegetables will be ready for harvesting. The flavors of fresh vegetables, grown and matured in a natural way is something special. Some people like storing them in a root-cellar to keep the texture and flavor, others make preserves. Quite a few also store them in a deep-freezer, ready to be brought out anytime during the long winter. Enjoying the fruits of your hard work will last for months!

There is a lot to discover in life, and I am happy to have my children with me during the journey. We love cooking, travelling and reading. Taking pictures of nature and other things that come in our way also keep us busy. With digital cameras it is so easy to fix pictures and use them for a lot of things, including Zazzle. Writing articles is also fun, especially when we can include some of our pictures!
