October 20, 2010 | Author: | Posted in Romance

Paranormal Romance is a sub-genre of the romance novel with awards of excellence handed out each year by PEARL (Paranormal Excellence Award for Romantic Literature).  Within the sub-genre of paranormal romance are categories that are judged for the best with an overall winner for each year.  The awards for novels from 2009 were announced on March 21st of 2010.

The categories considered for the PEARL Award are:

  • Anthology
  • Fantasy
  • Futuristic
  • Fantasy/Magical
  • Science Fiction
  • Shapeshifters
  • Time Travel
  • Urban Fantasy
  • Vampire

Obviously being an award given for Romantic Literature means that each of the books considered must fit not only as a romance novel but also into one of the above paranormal categories. The novel must blend real life with the fantastic or science fictional life.

Fantastic elements must involve vampires, werewolves, demons, humans with psychic abilities, witches, or ghosts. Science fictional elements will include Time Travel, futuristic, or extraterrestrial romance.

The novels falling into Paranormal Romance can take place in the past and also be considered historical fiction or the novels might have a more contemporary setting and fall into the realm of Urban Fantasy.

It might seem a little complicated to many, however it has not stopped the popularity of this sub-genre of Romance novels from soaring. Books in hard cover, paperback, and digital form fly off the shelves and virtual aisles of the internet with unbelievable rapidity.

The overall winner of the 2009 PEARL award went to Lover Avenged by J. R. Ward. Falling in the Vampire category of Paranormal Romance this book was published in hard cover on April 28, 2009. Ward is no stranger to paranormal romance and the vampire category as his winning title is actually book 7 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
