Osama bin Laden

Late on Sunday 01 May, 2011 President Barack Obama addressed the world to announce that Osama bin Laden is dead.

Bin Laden’s death brings to an end one of the most intense and enduring man-hunts ever conducted in modern times. Widely accepted as the architect behind the 9/11 bombings of the World Trade Centre in New York, Bin Laden had been on the run for nearly a decade, with the search for him being conducted mainly in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Shockingly, Bin Laden was found in a specially fortified house, only a few hundred yards from the Pakistan Military Academy. An military institution as important to Pakistan as West Point is to the USA and Sandhurst is to the British.

What an audacious move! Build a house for one of the most wanted men in the world, in a “secure” area!

During my research about Bin Laden I learned about his upbringing in Saudi Arabia, his education and how he became radicalized through his contact with fellow Muslims while at University. His beliefs took him to Afghanistan, where he fought with the mujihadeen against the Soviets for 10 years and where ironically, considering what was to come, he and his fellow fighters were armed by the US.

His views of the US were changed forever, during the 1991 invasion of Iraq, when Allied Forces, including women, were based in Saudi Arabia, the site of two of the most holy sites in Islam. Bin Laden declared this blasphemy.

Actual details of Bin Laden’s death and his burial are gradually being released and will be added to my page Osama bin Laden as they are published.
