Learning more about other cultures

Starting in 2001, the UNESCO declared that May 21st should be Diversity Day. Or, rather,  The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a day to deepen our understanding of other cultures.

On the one hand, it is sad that such a promotion of a special day should be necessary. After all, are we not all the same? But it is a fact that culture, or rather the ignorance of each-other’s cultures, is causing many problems in the word. Therefore, we should be grateful for this opportunity to get to know our neighbors!

In some offices and schools, Diversity Day is arranged as a special event. Some will arrange for guest-speakers to come and speak about different aspects of culture. Others will invite the employees to cook food from their respective countries and all will eat together. In many cities there are a number of different nationalities in any given work-place or school. Workshops and games are also popular ways of learning about others.

Focusing on culture in this way has produced good results. People don’t  need to live side by side, just tolerating each-other. When there is appreciation for other people, there is more peace in a neighborhood. Interaction and sharing gives a deeper sense of contentment when dealing with other people.  This does not mean changing your own life, rather it’s a deepening of your own culture. We can all learn something from each-other, thus enriching our own lives.

There is a lot to discover in life, and I am happy to have my children with me during the journey. We love cooking, travelling and reading. Taking pictures of nature and other things that come in our way also keep us busy. With digital cameras it is so easy to fix pictures and use them for a lot of things, including Zazzle. Writing articles is also fun, especially when we can include some of our pictures!
