SAD: Seasonal Affective Disorder

Are you affected by SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder?  Seasonal Affective Disorder is also sometimes called the Winter Blues.  This is a condition that is associated with clinical depression and can attack people of any age, but is more common in women.

Sufferers from SAD range in symptoms, but the most common effects occur when the winter cold and snow keeps sufferers inside, and the days are shorter and darker.  Symptoms are depression, sleepiness, and lack of interest in activities.  The severity of these symptoms range in people affected with this disorder.  While some people only are mildly affected, others are are confined to bed, too depressed to get out of bed and resume normal life.

To help alleviate the symptoms, regular exercise on a daily basis will spread endorphins throughout the body, and some people have success spending time under full spectrum light for periods of time.

Part of the solution is to find out exactly what is triggering the symptoms.  Is it the cold, the darkness, or the relentlessness of winter that is the trigger.  If it is the cold, sometimes just turning up the heat in the house will help.  If it is the darkness, then the light therapy can help or taking a vacation to a sunnier climate.
