Blu and Exile: Below the Heavens
In the underground rap scene music is released around the year with little publicity and acclaim from major publications. When rapper Blu and producer Exile collaborated on Below the Heavens their project exceeded all expectations as it was written about and talked about by mainstream hip-hop publications and his considered one of the best albums of the last decade.
The album is mostly philosophical in that much of the lyrics focus on the struggles of life and whether there is anything more to experience. While young (22) Blu shows extreme maturity as he talks about struggles with being a father, earning money, happiness, places to sleep, a and a good relationship among other things. As the albums comes to a close Blu decides that we don’t live in a perfect world and our struggles are an outcome of it. We live below the clouds (where heaven lies) and naturally face hardships. He proclaims that we shouldn’t be materialistic and selfish. We are meant to give.
The album certainly gives knowledge and a perspective not many people, let alone hip-hop fans, have heard before. All of Blu’s lyrics are eloquently backed by Exile’s production which fuses old samples with classic drum beats. If there is any hip-hop album you are going to buy let it be Blu and Exile’s: Below the Heavens.
